It's true! 2019 is the year of the vegan!

The Economist names 2019 the year of the vegan! We couldn't agree more!

Well, it's official, The Economist has named 2019 the year of the vegan and we couldn't agree more.

Reading through the magazine's annual look ahead this morning, we were ecstatic to see that they have claimed this year ahead would see veganism going mainstream and when you look at the facts, it is hard to dispute it.

If plant-based “meats” take off, they could become a transformative technology, improving Westerners’ protein-heavy diets, reducing the environmental hoof print of animal husbandry and perhaps even cutting the cost of food in poor countries.
- The Economist

From clothes to food, 2018 saw record breaking levels of growth for plant-based businesses and the number of people who are eating a vegan or vegetarian diet have increased significantly in recent years. The article notes that the driving force behind that growth is millennials (aged 25-34) of whom 25% eat a vegan or vegetarian diet and are demanding more alternatives to meat, eggs, wools, silks and leathers. And they are getting it too.

School districts & hospitals are going to or being encouraged to offer more vegan options, McDonald's is selling McVegan burgers, and there have been vegan steaks and meats made that could fool even the biggest meat eaters and we've only scratched the surface. So we definitely agree 2019 is the year of the vegan!

When a vegan steak...arrived on supermarket shelves in June, 40,000 were sold within a week.

We know that with an increase in education and showing people how easy it is to convert their lives to animal-free/cruelty-free products, there will be a growth in the vegan movement. We already see it daily in our personal lives, when our friends and family say we've inspired a "plant-based family meal night" or they've decided to give up milk, dairy or other animal product. Small changes will effect big change over the long term, so we applaud everyone who is making an effort.

It's important to note, you don't have to immediately stop everything you are doing and please don't throw away those leather shoes you bought last year because you think that's the only way you can be vegan.

Don't put so much pressure on yourself!

Make small changes every day and you'll see how easy it to live a plant-based existence.

And remember the more we show businesses that vegans do exist and are a viable market, the more we'll find greater options and choice in those products. So, support local vegan businesses and whenever you see businesses making positive changes, reward them by buying from them so they'll continue to stock those products and will expand their options in the future.

We champion for our vegan community everyday here at Vegan Vacations, so we'll have greater choice in our vegan travel options in the future and promise to continue to do so in 2019. We hope you'll call us when booking your next vacation and we hope that you find your best plant-based self this Year of the Vegan!

Happy 2019!
