Vegan tattoos at sea in 2020
Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady to feature first-ever Vegan Tattoos at Sea!

October 23, 2018 - Virgin Voyages made a big announcement yesterday confirming their first ship, Scarlet Lady, will feature the first-ever tattoo shop at sea, "Squid Ink" hosting 2 full-time resident tattoo artists. The shop will also offer body piercings as well as permanent makeup sessions for anyone sailing aboard when it begins cruising in 2020.

Tom McAlpin, president and chief executive officer for Virgin Voyages, told Travel Industry Today,

“Tattooing is a time-honoured seafaring tradition, and we’re continuing that legacy with rock and roll style by bringing some of the best ink artists to sea, our sailors are looking to make lifelong memories, and we think there's no better way to commemorate their first voyage with us than with a souvenir they'll never lose track of.”

Virgin Voyages are bringing back the traditions of Sailors with this concept reminding us all;

"For generations, sailors have believed in the power of tattoos to shield them against the dangers at sea...They were [also] known as identifying markings for long-term sailors who earned their living primarily at sea."

Virgin hopes that each one of their guests will commemorate their voyage in a more permanent way than perhaps getting a t-shirt of a keychain.

What makes this so unique is that all of Squid Ink's tattoos will be created using vegan friendly tattoo ink by World Famous Tattoo Ink. This revolutionary ink contains zero animal products, is never tested on animals, has better vibrancy and is more reliable and safer on the skin. Knowing that Virgin Voyages is keen to provide vegan options for even this small element of their ship makes me very eager to see how else they will incorporate plant-based options in their on board amenities.

I think this is a really cool idea and I can see quite a few people who might not normally consider getting a tattoo try out it out or at least go get educated more on the process than they would on land. I also am really excited to see a brand like Virgin committing more to resources to being sustainable and focusing on the wellness aspect and incorporating choices for people living a plant-based life.

My only reminder to everyone is... no drinks before getting tattooed. That's a big no, no!

Here at Vegan Vacations, we are working with brands to increase their understanding of the needs of vegan travellers and I am certainly going to be having more conversations with Virgin Voyages about how else they might be able to accommodate us. The more vegans travel the more choices we will have in the future.
