What is Veganuary?

Let us tell you about Veganuary and how you can take part!

What is Veganuary?

So, it’s January 1st and you are either hung over from a late night party or have started your day early to keep up with those resolutions you have given yourself. Either way, chances are when flipping through your social media profiles this morning you saw a post about Veganuary and you probably thought, “what the heck is that?” while chuckling to yourself. (because hey… that’s a great play on words!)

Well, we wanted to let you know what this great organization is all about and how in just 5 years they went from just a few hundred participants to a total of more than 250,000 people in 193 countries today.* The Guardian reports that

“Rich Hardy, head of campaigns at Veganuary, said that on Sunday alone 14,000 people pledged to go vegan for the first month of 2019 – a rate of one every six seconds.”

That’s unbelievable really, but shows the upward momentum of the vegan movement.

So what is Veganuary? Well, it’s a UK based charitable organization that was founded by the married team, Matthew Glover & Jane Land in 2014 and is now a global movement that is effecting major positive changes for our entire planet. Both, were vegetarians who eventually made the change to vegan and noticed there was an opportunity to spread the message of veganism.

So Matthew & Jane set out to create a month-long pledge that was different than the rest and decided it would happen in January to coincide with the new year, resolutions and new beginnings that so many of us strive to achieve.

Their website states “Veganuary is dedicated to changing public attitudes, while providing all the information and practical support required to make the transition to veganism as easy and enjoyable as possible.” It continues “Veganuary has had an incredible degree of success in a very short time and is changing lives all over the world.”
Co-founder, Jane has said they “…also wanted to create an inclusive community where people could feel supported and heard.”

Their website has 100’s of vegan recipes, tons of expert advice & videos, and offers unique support to those who may be considering moving towards living plant-based. You can get a starter kit emailed to you right away or a few weeks from now (so you have time to curb your cheese addiction ;)) It’s really a no pressure environment where you get to explore some new food options that will no doubt benefit you greatly in the long run.

We at Vegan Vacations have already signed up and support this organization every day by trying to spread the word about the benefits of living plant-based and the positive effects it has on our planet and quite frankly our souls.

We also are supporting this great effort this year by presenting our “31 Easy Hacks to Vegan Up Your Life Now.” Each day of Veganuary, we’ll post a new short video on our YouTube channel, showing you an alternative to one of the animal-based products you may be currently using in your kitchen. Some you will already know, but some are definitely going to surprise you.

We hope you’ll join us this month for Veganuary and that you’ll share your experiences with us on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter or send us an email with your vegan tips to admin@veganvacations.ca.

Happy New Year!
