Vela Resorts has been sharing a weekly interactive e-magazine with travellers during quarantine and COVID-19. This has been quite a wonderful way to stay in touch with the team at Velas because it's not just your average newsletter, it's got beauty tips and treatments, travel tips and advice, recipes (albeit not very vegan friendly ;() and wellness practices just to name a few things.

This week they shared their picks for the top 8 spots to visit in the Riviera Maya while visiting their Grand Velas Riviera Maya resort and we thought they had some definite great picks. We know our clients will love to know about these spot for their next trip and surprisingly some have vegan options available!

Chichén Itza

This 7th wonder of The Modern World is one of the most popular archaeological sites in the world and sure to be on everyone's bucket list when travelling to Mexico.

Playa del Carmen

This "neighbourhood" is where Grand Velas Riviera Maya resort is located and is sure to be on their list of top picks, but this area has a wonderful nightlife and is perfect to enjoy some live entertainment, shopping and gorgeous beaches too. This area has quite a few more vegan options than most in Mexico

Tulum

Beautiful Beaches, picturesque vistas and views abound in Tulum. You can visit the ruins of a Mayan city that is next to the Sea and there are even quite a few one plant-based and vegan-friendly spots to visit while in this part of the Riviera Maya.

Akumal 

If you are a nature lover, and in particular a turtle lover, you are going to want to visit this spot. Apparently, Akumal means "turtle place" in the Mayan language, so this is definitely where you'll want to to see them and the conservation projects that are underway to protect these beautiful creatures. 

Xcaret

Xcaret was recognized in 2016 as The Best Thematic Park in the World, Xcaret allows guests to navigate underground rivers, explore jungles, swim with dolphins, dive and snorkel on pristine waters and more.  You are sure to get an authentic Mexican experience if you visit this MUST SEE attraction. Plus they are able to accommodate vegan & plant-based guests too ;)

Isla Mujeres

WOW. Is the only way to start this description because Isla Mujeres is one breathtaking spot. It's located 8 miles from Cancun and is only reachable by ferry but offers visitors a number of different natural settings including beaches, mangroves, natural parks, and even an underwater Museum of Art.  This destination is on many travellers bucket-list and it's not difficult to see why. While there is not yet a vegan specific establishment on the island, there are at least 10 tasty spots that can accommodate vegans upon request. 

The Cenote Route

Cenotes are another must-do attraction when visiting Mexico, but did you know that there was a 22-mile (35.4 km from us Canadians) cenote "corridor" in the country? Cenotes are natural pit caves or sinkholes with groundwater. One of the main attractions of Riviera Maya are cenotes, which are natural pit caves or sinkholes with groundwater. Alongside the cenote route, you'll discover exotic flora and fauna, as well get to experience caves with underground rivers made for swimming, off-road tours, cycling, zip-line rappelling, and more.

Cozumel

Cozumel is Mexico's 3rd largest island as well as the perfect spot for enjoying tranquillity & nature. This paradise will allow you to explore the many different species of corals, flora and fauna of the Caribbean while snorkelling in National parks, relax on beautiful white sandy beaches with pristine waters and get a truly spectacular vacation.
